This drawing was one of my initial textplorations where I was using the format of writing (from left to right in a straight-line) to use as a foundation to create abstraction.
The method began with me writing a phrase, over and over again, and then “pushing it back” with various levels of cross-hatching to conceal the words just enough to make them unreadable. The hope was (I believe) to create a visual equivalent of a book without the text and it’s many meanings getting in the way. I’ve never since pursued this idea, but now that I’ve re-found this drawing, I might give the idea some legs again.
It would be a drawing that could only be seen by paging through the book that holds it.
